Carnaval Tenerife: A Festive Celebration Like No Other

If you’re looking for a lively and colorful event in Spain, then the Carnaval de Tenerife is a must-see. Held in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, this festival is considered the second most popular and internationally known carnival, just behind Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival in Brazil. In fact, the two cities are twinned due to the similarity of their carnivals.

A Festival of International Tourist Interest

Every year, thousands of people from around the world flock to the streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife for more tan a week of celebration. On January 18, 1980, it was declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest by the Spanish Secretary of State for Tourism, making it the only festival in the Canary Islands with such distinction.

Aiming for World Heritage Status

The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has a long and rich history dating back to the 18th century, and it has since evolved into a unique and vibrant celebration of Canarian culture. Today, the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is one of the most important events on the island and a true spectacle of music, dance, and costumes.

The Carnival of Tenerife holds, together with the Carnival of Cádiz and the Carnival of Águilas (Murcia), the highest consideration for parties granted by the ministry with competitions in tourism in Spain. The festival’s grand parade is the highlight of the carnival, with participants dressed in colorful costumes dancing to the beat of lively music.

Continues to evolve and grow, with aspirations to become a World Heritage Site. The carnival has become a symbol of Canarian culture and a celebration of the island’s history and traditions. If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience, make sure to plan your visit to Tenerife during carnival season and join in on the festivities.
