TEIDE NATIONAL PARK 🌋
The Shadow of Teide
Teide casts the largest shadow in the world projected into the sea.
NASA explains why Teide’s shadow is triangular.
The reason for the geometric shape of the shadow when in reality the Teide is not a triangle. There is no more to see the crater.
The reason is perspective and, they add in Astronomy Picture of the Day, this phenomenon “is not exclusive” to this mountain. What happens is that “Teide is usually seen from the tops of other great mountains and volcanoes. A key reason for the dark and strange shape is that the observer is looking down the long corridor of a shadow that extends to the horizon ”.
Under these conditions, “even if the huge volcano were a perfect cube and the resulting shadow were a long rectangular box, that box would appear to diminish at its top as its shadow extended into the distance, as do the parallel tracks of the train”. That is, just as if you look at the train tracks in a straight line towards the horizon, they seem to come together, the same thing happens with the shadow of Teide.
The shadow of the colossus Teide falls over the Mountain of Izaña – 2390 meters above sea level, where the facilities of the Teide Astrophysics Observatory, the military facilities, the Retevisión antenna and the facilities of the Izaña Atmospheric Observatory are located.
